What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a life-threatening disease caused by a mosquito species that breeds in the proximity of human habitation. It’s a mosquito-borne disease that is spread by mosquitos in tropical parts of sub- Saharan Africa and South America. It occurs in both urban and jungle environments and is particularly common in the rainy season. Mild symptoms can cause a flu-like illness which you can recover completely but severe symptoms include jaundice, liver, kidney, and respiratory failure.

You can visit the UK NHS website Fitfortravel or the National Travel Health Network and Centre to find out if immunisation against yellow fever is recommended.

About the Yellow Fever Vaccination

  • At least 10 days before you travel
Administration
  • The vaccine consists of an injection usually given in your upper arm
  • Available from 9 months old to 59 years old
Course
  • One dose of this vaccine is required
Booster
  • The vaccine protects you for a lifetime, but if you remain at risk of this disease, booster shots may be required
Children
  • The vaccine is suitable for children over the age of nine months
Side Effects
  • Side effects from this vaccine can include a headache, pain and soreness at the injection site. Serious side effects are rare
Certification
  • Once you have had the vaccine, you are provided with an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) as some countries will require this. This certificate is valid for up to 10 years from the 10 th day of your vaccination
Prevention & Precautions
  • A vaccination is the only effective way to prevent yellow fever if you are exposed to it. In addition to getting vaccinated, it is important to take steps to try to avoid being bitten by mosquitos in high risk areas
