Typhoid Fever is an infection of the gut and blood stream which is spread through the ingestion of
contaminated food or water, and is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. It can cause intestinal bleeding, toxic heart disease, pneumonia, seizures and swelling of the brain. Worldwide there are around 13 – 16 million cases of Typhoid reported a year of which 500,000 culminate in death.
Typhoid is more common in countries that have limited access to clean water or toilets. You can visit the UK NHS website Fitfortravel or the National Travel Health Network and Centre to find out if immunisation against typhoid is recommended.
