What is Hepatitis B?

The hepatitis B virus is one of the most prevalent blood-borne viruses worldwide which can cause a range of flu like symptoms as well as jaundice. It can become chronic and lead to liver damage and failure. The hepatitis B virus is usually passed via bodily fluids such as blood, saliva or via contaminated needles.

About the Vaccination

The hepatitis B vaccine is a safe and effective vaccine that is recommended for all infants at birth and for children up to 18 years.
  • The hepatitis B vaccine is also recommended for those at high risk for infection due to their jobs, lifestyle, living situations, or country of birth.
  • If you are travelling abroad, you can visit the UK NHS website Fitfortravel or the National
Travel Health Network and Centre to find out if immunisation against hepatitis B is recommended.

Administration

The hepatitis B vaccination is given via an injection in the upper arm

Course

The course consists of three doses (taken at 0, 1 and 6 months)

  • You must take the first dose at least 5 weeks before travel
  • The second dose must be taken one month after the first dose. The third dose must be taken at least 4 months after the first dose and 2 months after the second dose.

Booster

Once you have completed the full course, you will usually not need a booster for 5 years. Boosters are sometimes recommended after exposure to the disease

Side Effects

Side effects from this vaccine tend to be mild and transient and can include soreness at the injection site. Tiredness, fever, sickness and flu like symptoms have also been reported

Additional precautions

If travelling to a country where medical resources are limited, carry sterile needles with you. Use a condom every time you have sex to avoid catching hepatitis B during sex.

As you embark on your adventures, it's vital to prioritize safety. Don't forget to visit a travel clinic before your trip to ensure you have all necessary vaccinations and medications.
