What is Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio?

Tetanus is a vaccine-preventable disease caused by a bacterial infection which can attack the muscle and nervous system. Tetanus bacteria live in soil and dirt and can get through into the body via a cut or wound. Diphtheria is a serious throat and lung infection caused by a bacteria. Polio is a serious disease caused by a virus which can travel via the gut into the nervous system causing wasting of some muscles, paralysis of legs or arms and breathing problems.

About the Vaccination

  • Vaccination against DTP is part of the childhood vaccination programme. By the time they leave school, most children will have received a total of five doses which is enough to cover them for life. However, a further booster may be required if you are travelling abroad to prevent life threatening complications. Whether you require this booster depends on the date of your last vaccination.
  • You can visit the UK NHS website Fitfortravel or the National Travel Health Network and Centre to find out if immunisation against diphtheria, polio and tetanus is recommended
You should get your diphtheria, polio and tetanus booster two weeks before you travel

Administration

The diptheria, tetanus and polio vaccination is given via an injection in the upper arm

Course

  • You will only require one dose of a booster if you have already had the vaccination before
  • If you have never had the vaccination, you may need several doses
