You should get vaccinated at least 5 weeks before travelling
Administration
The combined hepatitis A and B vaccination is given via an injection in the upper arm
Course
The course consists of the vaccination depends on your age and when you are travelling. You may require 3 or 4 doses for full protection. Please consult your pharmacist who will advise which schedule is most suitable.
Accelerated course
In some cases, an accelerated course maybe suitable. The accelerated course consists of three doses prior to travel and a fourth dose 12 months later to fully complete the course. The second dose is given one week after the first dose and the third dose is given two weeks after the second dose.
Booster
Once you have completed the full course, you will be protected against Hepatitis A for 25 years and Hepatitis B for 5 years. Boosters are only recommended if you remain at risk of the disease once your protection runs out.
Children
The vaccine is suitable for children over the age of one year
Side Effects
Side effects from this vaccine tend to be mild and transient and can very commonly include soreness at the injection site. Tiredness, fever, headache and digestive problems have also been reported as common side effects.
Additional precautions
If travelling to a country where medical resources are limited, carry sterile needles with you. Use a condom every time you have sex to avoid catching hepatitis B during sex.
We are proud to serve our community with top-notch pharmaceutical services and personalised care. Your health and well-being are our top priorities.
